Thanks, Aletta, for your kind words and show of support. People like you are a pleasure to know!

Great news! In spite of heavy rain and my crashed computer, Nora, Linda, Linda's sister Cheryl, and I went to Springfield yesterday.

Rep. Lang made our day when he made a motion at the JCAR meeting Tuesday to extend the rulemaking another 45 days! I also got my computer fixed today!

We have until the next meeting on May 19, 2009 to gather evidence and support for the changes we'd like to see made on the State form.

This was a bold and courageous move on Rep. Lang's part. I applaud him and the other JCAR members for supporting this motion. We have less than a month now to show how Illinois can better the proposed form. Who knows where this can lead?

We will continue to strive for excellence at Vision First. Our Kids Eyes Count Campaign is a winning action plan!

Stay tuned for further updates here soon...

UPDATE: Nora, Linda, and I will be going to Springfield on Tuesday. Wish us luck as we hope to connect with legislators and other advocates. I'll keep you posted on the action taken at JCAR's meeting.

Also, here is an excerpt of the letter sent to IDPH yesterday regarding Vision First's objection to the proposed rulemaking...

"Dear Ms. Meister:

I'm aware the proposed rulemaking went to second notice and that Michael Horstman, executive director of the Illinois Optometric Association objected to an alternate form as proof of an eye exam.

His objection is shocking and contrary because he is an employee of the association that adopted the resolution Importance of Comprehensive Eye and Vision Examinations in 2007 that supports the mission of Vision First Foundation.

For the record, Vision First Foundation strongly objects to the following sections of the proposed amendments of the Child Health Examination Code: 665.150-160, and 665.620-640.

Non-acceptance of the Vision First form and the repeal of Public Act 85-0351 during this rulemaking will NOT assure a consistent level of diagnostic eye care and will NOT ensure equal access to this care for all Illinois children as presented in the State Mandates Act Questionnaire."

As soon as my crashed computer is fixed, I will post my complete letter. :)
